Dr Sophie Scamps’ Parliamentary Speech for Be Centre

19 Mar 2024

Thank you, Dr Sophie Scamps MP, for advocating in your 2024 budget submission for child-centred play therapy to be included in the Better Access Mental Health Care Initiative.

As you highlighted 50% of ALL mental health begins before the age of 14 – early intervention is critical. Currently, Play Therapy is NOT included under Medicare in Australia.
Early intervention through evidence-based Play Therapy is key to preventing trauma and mental distress in children from becoming chronic.

Be Centre Foundation is proud to be leading the way here in Australia through early intervention Play Therapy for 3–12-year-olds who are impacted by trauma. As a registered charity we currently receive NO ongoing government funding, and 30% of our services for children impacted by trauma are provided free by our generous community of supporters.
