News Article – Newsletter Issue # 7

23 May 2024

As we approach the halfway mark of the year, we’re taking a moment to reflect on the positive impact we’re making each day to children and families in need. At Be Centre, we’re witnessing a growing demand for our services as children and families experience trauma. This can manifest in various forms, from overt instances like abuse to seemingly smaller changes like moving house or shifts in family dynamics.

In Australia, about 1 in 10 children aged 4-11 have a mental health disorder with nearly 50% of all mental health disorders starting before the age of 14. Early intervention is key to ensuring we help and support as many children as possible heal from trauma so they can thrive.

Play Therapy is evidence-based, and our impact reports show that 100% of parents agree that Play Therapy has helped their child, contributing to an overall better and more positive state of well-being. Additionally, 87.5% agree that their child is now better able to better express their emotions.

However, the increasing demand for our services reflects a concerning trend of more children grappling with mental health issues. Through continued community generosity, grants, and donations, we aim to further extend our impact within the community.

MAKING A DIFFERENCE

IMPACT REPORT

Our latest six-monthly Impact Report offers insights into our efforts to facilitate early mental health services for children. During this period, we supported 184 children through our services, providing a total of 1,618 Play Therapy sessions.

Additionally, Be Centre Foundation has expanded its offerings by introducing Group Therapy programs, delivering 23 group sessions in the past six months. The increasing demand for our services reflects a concerning trend of more children facing mental health challenges.

SCHOOL HOLIDAY WORKSHOPS

We’re pleased to introduce a new series of workshops during the school holidays run by our wonderful clinicians, ranging from creative fun activities to those with therapeutic benefits. These workshops were open to the wider community, not just existing Be Centre clients, aiming to extend our services to more children. The feedback from participants was overwhelmingly positive, and we’re excited to offer more workshops during the July school holidays. Stay tuned for updates!

A heartfelt thank you to the Pittwater Artists Trail for their dedication in raising $2,000 through their Group Exhibition Silent Auction. The community was given the delightful opportunity to bid on artworks and jewellery, all in support of raising funds for Be Centre! At the event, our remarkable Play Therapist, Fiona Geoghegan, eloquently shared insights into the profound impact of Play Therapy and the therapeutic journey it offers children in our therapy rooms.

Trivia Night Success!

A big thank you to all who joined us for our fourth Trivia Night at The Waterfront Café and General Store. Together, we raised crucial funds for children and families in need through our silent auction and Club 100 raffle. Special appreciation goes to Craig from The Meldrums for providing live music, and to Lachlan from White Box Analytics for being our trivia master, and of course Catalina and Linda for their wonderful help and support. We are also immensely grateful to Mary and Maria, from the Waterfront Cafe, for hosting this event once again.

In a recent interview with Pittwater Life, Tania Taylor highlighted the crucial role of community donations, corporate grants and foundation support for Be Centre Foundation.
